Laser Tattoo Removal

Firstly, i welcome you all in this complete informational post regarding tattoo removal especially with the help of latest technology i.e. laser therapy. Before proceeding ahead, i want you to have a look on my previous article about tattoo cover up ideas for brainstorming new patterns, if you are not totally ready to remove your old tattoo. There are various types of tattoo removal methods. I want to briefly discuss some major methods.

  1. Excision :- Normally this method is used especially for smaller tattoos like names, scripts rather than images. Here, the particular tattoo is surgically cut out, and the skin from both of the sides is sewn together. Skin grafting can also be an option.
  2. Dermabrasion:- In this process, the skin over the top of the tattoo is sanded away. Initially, a chemical spray freezes the top layer of the tattooed skin, then the dead skin is rubbed. This is very complicated and needs proper healing and care of skin in between the sessions.
  3. "Fade Away" Tattoo Removal:- In this method, particular cream is rubbed on the tattooed area which are then absorbed by the skin. Consistent use of such creams contributes a reaction which results in breaking down of the ink's component and finally is absorbed by body. This method is probably the cheapest and less painful method of tattoo removal.
  4. Chemical Peels:- In this method, a peel of Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is applied to the skin. This solution causes the particular area to blister and peel off.
  5. Cryosurgery:-  This method generally involves in freezing the area of tattoo before removing it. This method is more effective when used in conjunction with dermabrasion method. [Source of points 3-5 is Whitney on hubpages]
  6. Laser Tattoo Removal:- This is the most advanced and effective method of removing of tattoos. Here, pulses of laser light is managed to penetrate the skin which breaks the pigmented tattoo and fragments them. Then, body's self-process of clearing and cleaning away the fragmented ink starts resulting in fading of tattoo over time. This blog post is mainly focused on this method of tattoo removal.

In this method, a specific wavelength of energy from the laser is targeted to the tattooed skin without harming the surrounding skin. This energy from the laser breaks and fragments the large molecule of ink into smaller fragments which are then absorbed and faded out naturally by our body's immune system. Depending on the density and surface area of tattoo, this process may take multiple sessions to completely clear the tattoo without leaving any scars. Different colors need different wavelengths for higher effectiveness. Black and blue colors are easier to remove.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Process Painful?

Well, it depends on the surface area of tattoo covered as well as the density and color used. But, normally as you know the sensation of how it feels when it was originally created. When the laser beam penetrates the skin, a sensation of prick or pinch can be felt or like hundreds of pinches and pricks done at once in a little surface area if your tattoo is small. This can be a little painful. But, you must have to be psychologically prepared before beginning the procedure. Now, what can you do to lessen or remove this painful sensation?? Pain killers and anesthetics are not used generally for laser tattoo removal process. If you needed to take any medications, consulting to general physician is must to be assured that, the medication does not have negative side effects with laser beams. The most prominent negative side effects after tattoo removal process is scarring. It normally changes the texture of the skin. Colors other than black are very challenging to remove completely which are more prone to leave scars. Other effects are blisters which can lead to infection if aftercare is ignored. Rashes in skin area are common but they will heal with time.

Tattoo Removal Aftercare

Care must have to be taken even after tattoo removal procedure. Sun rays must be avoided by using powerful sunblock creams, during and before treatment. Make the area as pale as you can. Never scratch and pinch the treated area no matter what, scratching and pinching will increase the chance of scarring. In case of formation of blisters, they should be left untouched and to heal naturally, in some cases dressing is another option.
